After serving with the British army in World War II, German-born entrepreneur and engineer Max Gort-Barten stayed in England and started his Dualit company in 1945. Max designed a commercial market 6-slice toaster with a built-in timer in 1952. The Dualit company continued to grow and extend its range of commercial toasters with Max's son Leslie joining the business in the 1970s.
